THE DEFINITION

The first clothing layer is an optional part of the kit

A base layer sits between your skin and the visible playing kit. It can be a short- or long-sleeve top beneath the jersey, undershorts beneath the shorts, or tights that extend below them. Some products are described as compression garments, but “base layer” alone does not prove a medical or performance benefit. The ordinary reasons to wear one are comfort, coverage and managing how the kit feels in a particular temperature.

adidas describes base layers as close-fitting garments made in different fabrics for moisture and temperature management. This describes a clothing category, not a promise that every layer is suitable for every player. Fabric weight, sleeve length and construction matter more than whether the item carries the word “performance.” A jersey itself is usually the visible outer match shirt; an undershirt is optional and is not a replacement for it.

Start with what actually bothers you. If your jersey clings when damp, compare a light breathable top. If the pitch is cold while you are standing before kickoff, a long-sleeve layer may be comfortable, but you may still need an outer jacket while waiting. If your shorts rub, undershorts may address that problem without changing the upper body. Do not buy a full set just because the catalog groups these items together.

TYPES

Choose the garment that solves one clothing problem

GarmentTypical useCheck before buying
Short-sleeve topExtra layer beneath a jersey with less arm coverageNeckline, sleeve visibility, fabric feel
Long-sleeve topMore coverage in cool conditionsVisible sleeve colour and arm movement
UndershortsCoverage beneath match shortsWaist and leg opening; visible colour
Full-length tightsLeg coverage in cold sessionsMovement, heat and competition rules

Thickness is a separate choice. A lightweight top and a heavier thermal top can share the same shape yet feel very different once you are running. Try the complete combination with your jersey, shorts, socks and shin guards. If waistbands stack, the shirt rides up, or the sleeve bunches beneath the jersey, change the garment or size. Warm-up comfort alone is not enough: move and sweat in it before deciding it works for a match.

A base layer is not mandatory equipment under football’s Laws. IFAB Law 4 lists the compulsory shirt, shorts, socks, shinguards and footwear separately. Competition rules may impose further kit requirements, so check with the organizer before a formal match.

FIT

Use movement and fabric contact as the fit test

The fabric should stay close enough to avoid bunching but should not restrict breathing, shoulder rotation, sprinting or kicking. Adidas recommends a snug rather than excessively tight base layer and notes that both restriction and excess looseness can interfere with use. Stand with arms raised, twist the torso, jog and make several quick changes of direction. If a seam rubs repeatedly or the hem rolls, another cut may be better than sizing down or up without checking.

Consider the garment’s exact care and material label. Synthetic knits and wool blends differ in feel and washing needs; neither fabric name alone guarantees comfort or warmth. For hot training, an extra layer can add heat, so assess whether you need it at all. For cold training, manage the whole outfit: the layer under the jersey, any permitted outerwear for warm-up, and a dry change of clothing afterward. See the cold-weather kit guide for the broader clothing decision.

MATCH RULES

Check the parts that remain visible

Colour matters most when the undergarment shows. Under current IFAB Law 4, a visible undershirt must either use the main colour of the shirt sleeve or exactly replicate its sleeve pattern or colours. Visible undershorts or tights must match the main colour of the shorts or their lowest part, and teammates must use the same colour. Ask your team or referee how the rule applies to your uniform; do not assume that every black or white layer is acceptable.

Check the sleeve beyond the jersey cuff and the tights below the short hem while standing and running. A fully hidden garment may raise a different practical issue, such as excess heat or a rolling seam, rather than a visible-colour issue. Youth, recreational and school competitions can have additional requirements. The safest pre-match step is to show the intended complete outfit to the coach or organizer before match day.

PRACTICAL DECISION

Choose the base layer from the job it must do

If the problem is a cold bench, a base layer under the match jersey may help with comfort during play, but you may still need a warm jacket when substituted. If the problem is chafing, inspect seams and fit where the layer touches the skin; a heavier garment is not automatically better. If the problem is sun exposure, check the exact fabric's stated protection rather than assuming any long sleeve has a certified rating. One garment cannot be evaluated without the use case.

Try the complete kit before a match. Put the layer under the jersey, tuck it as you normally would and move through a sprint start, overhead reach and trunk rotation. Look for sleeves rolling up, hems bunching at the waist and seams rubbing under the arm. If compression feels restrictive or breathing becomes uncomfortable, change size or style. A good base layer should support normal movement, not require constant adjustment.

For organized soccer, check visible colors. IFAB Law 4 specifies undershirt sleeve colors or patterns and the color of visible undershorts or tights. Local competitions may have additional kit requirements. Ask the team before ordering a group of contrasting underlayers, and read the garment care label before washing technical fabric.

Care instructions are part of the purchase decision. Check whether the underlayer can be washed with the team's normal kit and whether any printed logo or compression panel needs special handling. A player using the same garment several times a week may need more than one so each can dry fully. If the fabric irritates the skin during a short practice, do not expect a longer match to make it comfortable; compare a different seam position, fabric feel or fit.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are soccer base layers required?

No. The normal compulsory match kit is listed in IFAB Law 4; a base layer is an optional additional garment.

Are compression shorts the same as undershorts?

Compression shorts are one type of close-fitting undershort. Check fit, fabric and match-colour rules rather than assuming the label gives a benefit.

Can I wear a different-colour long-sleeve top under my jersey?

If the sleeves are visible in a match, apply IFAB Law 4 and any competition rules. They normally need to match the jersey sleeves or exactly replicate their design.

SUMMARY

Choose the layer for comfort, then check the kit rule

A close-fitting top or bottom can add coverage, but it should let you move freely and any visible colour must meet the rules of your match.
